Youth Development Clinic a Huge Success!

April 19, 2012

Team Canada Head Coach Jason Stephens along with Team Canada Alumni Kyle Henderson & Mitch Vevang rolled into the Tri Leisure Center April 7th to be greeted by a large group of talented roller hockey players for the first Team Canada Youth Development Clinic of the 2012 season.

55+ players registered for the one-day roller hockey extravaganza with each player receiving 3 hours of on floor and one hour of off-floor direction from the Team Canada crew, one hour question & answer with the guys, a Team Canada practice jersey, Team Canada PHAT Tape and a set of REVISION wheels!

“The two host associations AMRHA & SPinline put a huge effort into making this event a success,” Nathan Fleck Executive Director, NIHA-Canada said.” With their work, we were able to kickstart the roller hockey season in Alberta with an amazing event that created some excitement around our sport.”

“The energy that these young players and their parents brought to the event was just fantastic,” Jason Stephens said. “Having two on-floor sessions with each age group allowed us to really work on some skills that players of that age and ability really need to focus on in order to become stronger roller hockey players.”

On-floor, skill development was the focus but during the question & answer period, players had the chance to ask anything they wanted to the Team Canada guys.

“It’s always interesting to get asked questions from kids, you never know what they’re going to ask!” 2010 Team Captain Mitch Vevang said. “Growing up playing roller hockey at a young age I would’ve loved the chance to skate with Team Canada players and pick their brain about the game, it was great to be able to give back to the sport that has given me so many opportunities throughout my career.”

Kyle Henderson, Assistant Captain Team Canada 2011 enjoyed the interaction with the players throughout the day, “It was a blast to spend the day with the kids and work on some things and talk about the different opportunities these kids will have in 5-10 years locally, provincially and nationally.”
