Team Alberta: Past and Present

Team Alberta Alum show what could happen while representing province.

While this year’s Team Alberta gears up to head over to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to compete in the State Wars tournament, some former Team Alberta stars are just wrapping up their seasons with universities in the USA.

Ewen MacPherson just finished his senior year with Bethel University. In his freshman year with Bethel, he and three other Canadians, lead their team to the division two championship title. To follow up an impressive rookie season, MacPherson helped Bethel all the way back to championship glory, as they captured the National Championship to cap off a more than stellar sophomore season. As a junior, Bethel struggled through a rebuilding year, and as a result finished outside of the top ten in the nation.

This past season, Macpherson’s final and senior year, he and Bethel climbed back into the top ten, and met new up and coming Team Alberta Alumni, Terry Martin and UNLV in the quarterfinals. The youngster prevailed as UNLV edged out Bethel by a tight score of 5-4. Another Alberta boy, Cole Sonstelie, from Red Deer, buried all four goals for Bethel. In that quarter final, a torch passing of sorts happened, as Senior MacPherson’s season and college career came to an end, Terry Martin’s was just beginning.

Martin, a 94’ birth year from Ardrossan earned his scholarship to UNLV the same way MacPherson earned his to Bethel. They both showed their stuff to college scouts by putting their talents on display while competing for Team Alberta at past State Wars tournaments.

Over 100 players tried out for this year’s teams, and 84 have been chosen to form seven teams that will be heading down to Fort Wayne to represent Team Alberta. The teams span player birth years from 1996 all the way up to 2003. All 84 of these players, younger in age or older, will be looking to turn some heads down in Fort Wayne, and maybe even get a few scholarship offers from some college scouts.
