Team Alberta - State Wars 13
August 14, 2017

submitted by Kirk Jensen
This year the Team Alberta program took seven teams down to State Wars 13 in Taylor, Michigan. This year a record 320 teams from across the United States, Canada, UK and Sweden were represented at this year’s Roller Hockey State-Provincial Championships. Alberta was able to show the world the skills and abilities of our players and the strength of inline in Alberta.
For 2017 we took down teams from all tiers: AAA, AA and A. In AAA, the 2003 team won Gold defeating home town Michigan in the final for a very rare feat winning back-to-back AAA Gold. A feat that has not been done by any other team in Alberta or Canada for any birth year, or any division. In AA, the 2002 Team played Ontario for the AA Championship. These two teams know each other well and have met in the finals before. After another hard-fought battle, Alberta brought home the Silver. The 2006 team came to State Wars with a group comprised of almost all new players to the tournament. They battled Colorado hard in the AA final to a 4-1 loss and came home with Silver. In A, the 2000 team really came together and won Gold beating the inline power house, Pennsylvania, in the final.
We had three other teams finish just off the podium. Talking to the coaches, the players all took the championship as a great learning experience and with the knowledge gained said they want to be back in 2018 and bring home their hardware!
With the fine showing from all the teams, Alberta continues to be a recognized name and power at the championships. We always look the part, act the part, and on the surface, play the style no one wants to come up against.
Each year players of all ages, from AAA to A return home and say it is the finest, best run sporting event that they have ever attended.
