2025 Marks a Breakthrough Year for Alberta Roller Hockey
September 01, 2025
After years of steady rebuilding, Alberta roller hockey enjoyed a banner year in 2025, highlighted by strong participation, returning competitions, and major success on the provincial and international stage.
Participation surged across the province, with a growing number of teams and players taking part in Alberta Roller Hockey–sanctioned events throughout the year. Organizers point to renewed interest and momentum following several challenging seasons.
One of the year’s biggest milestones came with the return of the Alberta Roller Hockey Provincial Championships, held for the first time in a decade. The long-awaited competition brought together teams from across the province and marked a significant step forward for the sport’s development in Alberta.
The championships also welcomed the return of Lethbridge roller hockey teams, who competed at the provincial level for the first time in several years. Their participation was seen as a positive sign of the sport’s expanding reach beyond its traditional strongholds.
Tournament play also saw renewed strength. The Battle on Wheels tournament sold out for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting both increased demand and growing confidence in the sport’s future.
Another Milestone came in January, when Alberta Winter Roller Hockey Travel teams (The Alberta Ice) competed in California - marking the first time since the mid 2000's that Alberta teams have travelled to California for Winter Roller Hockey. The trip provided athletes with high-level competition and valuable experience against elite programs from the United States.
At the elite level, Team Alberta delivered impressive results. Provincial teams brought home medals in 11 of the 14 divisions they competed in, underscoring Alberta’s depth of talent and the effectiveness of its development programs.
With participation climbing, major events returning, and competitive success across multiple age groups, 2025 is being viewed as a turning point for roller hockey in Alberta—and a foundation for continued growth in the years ahead
